The proponents of the SOR argue that:

-Learners should not be taught/encouraged to use contextual information in attempting to solve unfamiliar words encountered while reading.

-Learners should rely exclusively on the alphabetic code in efforts to solve unfamiliar words encountered in text.

-The scientific evidence supports their position.

In this session we will discuss the theory and scientific evidence that refute these claims as well as the evidence that supports the SOP proponents' call for ensuring that literacy learners have the phonologically-based decoding skills needed for effective word solving in context.

In advance of the session, we encourage participants to submit questions that they would like to have addressed during the session-although we cannot promise to address or have answers to all questions that may be submitted. Please send questions to MHreadingcouncil@gmail.com.
