The New York State Reading Association has three publications: ReAD, a monthly electronic newsletter, The Empire State Reading Scene, and The Language and Literacy Spectrum journal. You will receive all of these publications with your membership. The following paragraphs describe each of these documents.

ReAD is sent to every NYRSA member who is registered on the Forum section of our webpage. Submissions are accepted up to the first of the month and the newsletter goes out around the middle of each month. (Current issue and archive - Members Only)


The Reading Scene (Current issue and archive - Members Only ) is a newsletter published two to four times per year. Currently it is available on line. A black-line master is shared with each council for distribution to those members without e-mail access. This newsletter provides information about organizational business such as awards and nominations, legislative initiatives, committee requests, calls for manuscripts, council events, State Education Department updates and so forth. The newsletter is mailed to the membership quarterly. Sample issue.

The Language and Literacy Spectrum (Sample Issue) is published annually by the New York State Reading Association (NYSRA). Subscriptions to the journal are granted as part of the membership fees for members in the New York State Reading Association. Currently, individual articles can be downloaded by members for their use. This is a peer reviewed journal. Language and Literacy Spectrum Curent Issue and archive.

Editors Seek Submissions for NYSRA Journal

The editors of The Language and Literacy Spectrum, the New York State Reading Association’s Journal, invite submissions of manuscripts for peer review. Manuscripts related to literacy teaching and development with emergent through adolescent learners, multicultural issues, children’s and adolescent/young adult literature, literacy for diverse populations, best practices that promote literacy development, teacher research, literacy assessment, literacy and technology, and critical literacy are some of the topics which would be welcomed.

While theoretical and research articles are invited, please keep in mind that this is a journal for the NYSRA membership, which consists primarily of practicing teachers and literacy specialists.

Manuscripts and accompanying abstracts may be sent by mail or electronically. For mail only, please submit four copies. Only original manuscripts that have not previously been published will be reviewed. Manuscripts are ordinarily between 10-20 pages long and must adhere to APA format. The author(s) should be identified on the title page only. Please include the name, mailing address, telephone number, fax, and email address of the author(s) on a separate cover sheet.

If a manuscript is accepted for the journal, contributors must submit an e-copy of the manuscript in Microsoft Word formal or send the Word document as an email attachment. The submission deadline each year is December 1st for the spring issue.
