Membership

Become a member of NYSRA by completing the membership form and paying the applicable rate for the council in which you live or work (make check payable to the respective council). To determine which council is closer to where you live, go to the local council web page by clicking here: Local Councils

As a member of a local council, you will receive a subscription to The Language and Literacy Spectrum and the Reading Scene. Councils sponsor professional conferences and dinners, and as a NYSRA member you will be the first to learn of these exciting events and activities. In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop professional friendships in other schools and districts, as well as meet nationally known educators and authors. Membership rates vary according to the program structures of the local affiliates. In some cases, dues include the costs of council dinners and conferences. Please contact Janice Peters, Membership Chairperson, Janice Peters janice_peters@verizon.net for applicable membership dues.

If there is no local council near you or you would prefer not to participate in local council actitivies, you may join the NYSRA as a member at large to enjoy all the benefits of membership.

First year teachers are invited to participate in NYSRA's New Teacher Membership program. This free membership is intended to attract beginning teachers into our professional organization. A NYSRA membership provides teachers an invaluable way to stay current in literacy theories and practices, and it offers a rich opportunity to network with other teachers across New York state. Along with this membership opportunity, NYSRA encourages new teachers to pursue membership in a local reading council. Information on local council memberships by contacting our state membership chair, Janice Peters.

New teachers taking advantage of this introductory membership will receive NYSRA's publications:

The Language and Literacy Spectrum, the journal of NYSRA
The Reading Scene, an annual publication of NYSRA
Mailings about our annual conference
Access to news about local council conferences, meetings, and membership
