LITERACY FOR ALL:  Full STEAM Ahead

 

NOVEMBER  12-14, 2017

Full Conference or Sunday registrants will work with some wonderful presenters and delve deeply into targeted topics
5 Mini Institutes
Colleen Murtagh Paratore – will present a practical and fun writing workshop for teachers of grades 2 – high school. Fireflies will give teachers  deeper understanding of how writing can be practical, specific and fun!

Tiffany S. Powell – will engage teachers of grades 3-9 in a hands-on session, Full STEAM Ahead, devoted to promoting instruction and pedagogy in science, technology, engineering, arts and technology.

Laura Robb – will work with upper elementary and middle school teachers to help provide tools and strategies to meet the needs of our struggling readers.

Kathleen A. Gormley and Peter McDermott – will provide upper elementary and middle school teachers with some tools and strategies to address the current issue of “Fake News” as our students continue to navigate the web.

Vicki Cobb (The Julia Childs of hands-on science) and authors from INK (Interesting Nonfiction for Kids) Think Tank will engage the teachers of our early learners in an engaging, hands-on session about our approach to science and the use of non-fiction texts with our young learners.

Bear – Author of Words Their Way, Co-Author of Vocabulary Their Way (Word Study with Middle and Secondary Students).  Professor in literacy education at Iowa State University and director of the Duffelmeyer Reading Clinic.  Author of numerous articles, chapters and 14 books including Words Their Way, 5th Edicion, Words Their Way for PreK, etc. – Sponsored by Pearson

Alan Sitomer -  a nationally renowned keynote speaker who specializes in engaging reluctant, underperforming students.  Author of over 20 books, ranging from teacher methodology to young adult novels like Homeboyz, Caged Warrior, The Hoopster and picture books such as Daddies Do It Different.  Sponsored by Scholastic

Donald Leu – Researcher on Digital Literacy, director of the New Literacies Research Lab at the University of Connecticut

Kim Yaris – Co-Author of Who’s Doing the Work and partner of Jan Burkins in the Think Tank for 21st Century Literacy (blog).

Lori Helman – One of the authors of Words Their Way with English Learners and many other Words Their Way products and publications.  Her main research focuses on students learning English as a new language.  Also editor of Literacy Development with English Learners:Research-Based Instruction in Grades K-6.

Anne Jolly – Leading educator in the field of STEM.  Author of STEM by Design: Strategies and Activities for Grades 4-8.
