  1. To encourage children to read and appreciate fine literature
  2. Select books of multi-culture nature
  3. Consider male and female protagonists
  4. Balance and variety of genres: Non-fiction, Contemporary, Historical Fiction, Biography, Adventure, Science Fiction, Poetry, Humor, etc.
  5. Illustrations
  6. Appeal to children
  7. Consider picture books as well as novels for intermediate, and young adult categories
  8. Consider books written by New York authors
